Prudential runs on a spread: $5.8B of net investment income pays for promises its premiums alone do not cover
Other income rose to $2.37B from $1.41B, which the filing attributes mainly to higher market values of equity securities and of assets backing experience-rated contracts, gains it says are fully offset in interest credited to policyholders. Net investment income rose to $5.78B from $5.23B, reflecting “business growth and higher reinvestment rates.”
Interest credited to policyholders’ account balances rose 73.5% to $1.97B from $1.14B, and its share of revenue rose 4.31 points to 12.6%. Measured against net investment income, it took 34.1% versus 21.8% a year earlier. The filing cites the annual assumption review, the offset to the market gains in other income, and business growth in retirement products.
Pre-tax income was $1.18B versus $740M, up 59.2%, and net income attributable to Prudential was $985M versus $533M, or $2.80 per share versus $1.48. Total benefits and expenses took 92.5% of revenue, down 2.13 points. Two volatile lines improved: realized investment losses narrowed to $1.57B from $1.70B, and the charge for market risk benefits shrank to $71M from $426M, which the filing ties mainly to favorable equity market performance.
